PROJECT INFORMATION
Launched in 2022, our Advocacy on Climate-Smart Education project addresses the critical need for climate education, responding to the environmental challenges heightened by increased flooding in Nigeria. This flooding has led to widespread displacement, school destruction, disrupted learning, forced relocations, and heightened poverty in affected communities.
WHY WE DO IT
Recent rise in sea levels causing increased flooding pose severe consequences, notably along the River Niger in Nigeria. Families are displaced, schools are destroyed, and children’s education is disrupted, exacerbating poverty. The Advocacy on Climate-Smart Education Project aims to prevent recurring calamities by promoting awareness of sustainable practices and establishing smart education systems in flood-prone areas. Our goal is to nurture environmentally conscious citizens actively contributing to a sustainable future, especially amidst climate-related challenges
HOW WE CARRY IT OUT
In response to recent flooding challenges, we surveyed four affected communities in Kogi state, assessing damage and the needs of affected populations. This informed our approach, focusing on innovative teaching methods and resources. Workshops in schools raise awareness about climate change and sustainable practices. Our curriculum integrates climate education into subjects, engaging students in practical activities like tree planting and waste reduction.

IMPACT (RESULT)

Conducted workshops in 50 schools, impacting 5,000 students. This initiative resulted in a 25% reduction in carbon footprint, contributing to the mission of creating awareness and resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.
Advocacy and documentary

Following our survey, we produced a documentary highlighting the impact of climate change on education, specifically addressing the consequences of flooding. The documentary, premiering soon, serves as a potent advocacy tool for governments and education stakeholders, urging decisive action on climate issues affecting learning and preventing similar disasters.
